Help needed for Colbert transport!

Hey guys! Just wanted to pass along a message I got at work from Dr. Andrews at Colbert Vet Rescue. Their transport is going out Thursday, December 9th and coming back Monday December 13th. I know we have finals and we’re all insanely busy, but I’m just sending this out because they have a few needs before/for the transport, such as:

“We need to find someone who has either a mini-van or larger SUV that would be able to drive with us to Connecticut for the event. There are 2 sets of pups and 3 special needs small dogs that will not be able to go into the big trailer, thus the need. Also, the truck will only seat 4 folks and we have a total of 7 going up. PLEASE – let anyone or everyone know – the gas, accommodations, food (no lobster please) will be paid for by the rescue, but it would get expensive for us to rent a van.”

Any more blankets/bedding/supplies would be greatly appreciated.

AND, if you have any supplies I can come pick them up from you or meet you somewhere on campus (preferably when I can bring my care so I’m not racing around to class with 34879 blankets/bones/whatever.

Thanks guys,

Vanesa

Last Meeting of the Semester

Hello, everyone!

We hope you’re all having a lovely Thanksgiving break!

The Cans for Critters supply drive was a great success! There were so many donations, and we’re happy to say that all of the generous proceeds will benefit a local animal shelter! (We’ll let you know which shelter will receive the supplies as soon as possible!) Thanks so much for all of your help!

We just have two quick announcements: first, there will be no more meetings until next semester; second, officer elections have been postponed until then.

Thanks so much, and have a great Turkey Day!

Athens Humane Society Blackout Contest!

THE CONTEST: The Athens Humane Society has arranged a contest called The Blackout. There are five prizes, and Forgotten Friends has put one member’s name below each prize. We want to win all five prizes so that we can use them as items in a silent auction, which we will organize as a fundraising event. The contest ends Sunday, Oct. 31 at 7 PM.

HOW TO WIN: The winner for each prize is the person who has collected the most points. One point is awarded for every person who comes in to play with the cats. Yes, you earn a point by simply cuddling with the cats! So bring as many friends as you can before Oct. 31 at 7 PM. It shouldn’t be too hard to convince people to go- cuddling with soft/purring cats is kind of a ridiculously awesome way to spend time. PS- you can also get points by donating money or by adopting cats, especially black cats!

NAMES: We have put the following names under the five prizes, so add your points to the name with the least number of points! Vanesa Barnett, James Connelly, Gail Gustavson, Abi Nishimura, Rebecca Todd, and Amy Wright.

WHERE: The Humane Society is in Pet Supplies Plus, a store in the Kroger shopping center.

Wednesday, October 20Go Green Alliance has asked us to join in on their Sustainability Day event. The event will last from 11am-3pm on the Tate West Lawn. We want to help bring a unique spin to this event and promote the idea of “recycling” shelter animals. We are working to bring adoptable/foster-ready dogs to the event. We will also be bringing dog and cat toys that we will make ourselves from various materials (socks, plastic bottles, etc). We also hope to do demonstrations at the Sustainability Day, showing pet owners how to make these types of recycled toys. Lastly, we will promoting all-natural pet food and animal care. Details are forthcoming, but please think about volunteering with us at this very special event. We would love your help! Once the final details are worked out with Go Green Alliance, we will send out a Google Spreadsheet link where you will be able to sign up with the times you are available to man the booth or help with the dogs. If you have any suggestions for additional Sustainability Day events, please email our secretary Amy Wright at awright8@uga.edu.

Saturday, October 23: We will be going to help out at Colbert Veterinary Hospital from 10am-2pm. Those who attend will be helping to deconstruct a shed in preparation for a concrete pour. The concrete will line the cages of the kennels, a much needed improvement at Colbert. Please click here to sign-up. (Need a ride? Write that on the sign up sheet and we will be more than willing to pick you up!)

Our next meeting will be held on October 21 at 7pm. Location will be announced as soon as possible. We will be making picture frames to help support local animal shelters! If you want to, you can bring any decorating materials that you would like: stickers, markers, paper, anything!

During the month of
November, we will be having a pet canned food drive. Each year, we collect pet items such as canned food, bagged treats, collars, etc to give to a local shelter. Information about where people can drop off items, what items are accepted, and where the items will go will be announced closer to November. Ask professors if they would be willing to give extra credit for a certain number of items brought in by students!

Elections will be held on our last meeting for the semester, November 18. If you wish to run, having something prepared to say about who you are and why you would fit the position. Here are the descriptions of executive positions and duties:
